Boat Rescue

Aug. 4, 2002 -- When the a photography foray goes flat, the best thing to do is drive very slowly
toward home. During the slow drive, chances are good you'll encounter a shot or situation
that will turn the day around.

That's what happened today. Just as the rain began driving hard and steady, I was ready to
call it quits. Then I saw a county rescue boat near the dock. I watched and photographed as the
King County Sheriff and the Kirkland Police Department rescued a pleasure boat from
its potential grave at the bottom of Lake Washington. Following are images from
the well-orchestrated rescue.

They try pumping water off the sinking boat.

Boat rescue

Rough waters, gale-force winds, and continual rain make rescue more difficult.

Boat rescue

The rescue draws a crowd from the lake.

And a crowd of bystanders on the dock.

Then the boat seems lost as it sinks even lower in the lake.

The boat begins to capsize.

A happy ride out of the water for the King County sheriff's deputy.

Ropes held despite the boat capsizing, and it is finally pulled out of the lake.
