Photography Instruction & Critiques

  • Private Instruction for Canon Digital SLRs

  • Photo Critiques

One of the aspects of photography that I enjoy is teaching and working with aspiring photographers to advance their technical skills and their creative eye. Thus, I'm offering two new services for photographers who would like to receive in-depth instruction or an unbiased review of one or more photos.

Private Photography Instruction

Private photography instruction ensures that you receive one-on-one attention to improve in the areas of photography that are most important to you. For example, if you feel that you have a good photographic eye, but you are using only a fraction of your camera's capabilities, then I can help you master your Canon Digital SLR. Alternately, you may be confident technically, but you feel that your creative eye needs direction. In either case, I can offer you unbiased, professional insight.

Some areas of private instruction include, but are not limited to:

  • Mastering exposure
  • Creating compelling compositions
  • Capturing and converting RAW images
  • Working with natural lighting
  • Working with studio lighting
  • Image editing with Adobe Photoshop CS 4

Instruction begins with an evaluation of some of your recent images in your online gallery. Then we will chat on the telephone about what you want to accomplish during the instruction time. I'll then create lessons tailored to your needs.

Alternately, if you have one of my Canon camera Field Guide books, we can identify techniques from the book for instruction sessions. If you want technical instruction on a camera, the cameras that I teach are the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, EOS 40D, EOS 50D, EOS 5D Mark II, and the EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Throughout the instruction session, you'll shoot images that are targeted to the improvement areas that we jointly identify. I'll provide ongoing feedback on your work with suggestions for alternate approaches, ways to use your camera to get better exposure results, and so on.

Instruction sessions are either 4 or 6 weeks long.

Either session ensures that you receive:

  • Instructional text that is e-mailed to you and tailored to your goals
  • In-depth critiques of two images per week
  • Weekly telephone calls to chat about your work and your goals

Four weeks of private instruction is $180. Six weeks of private instruction is $270.

Photo Critiques

One of the best ways to grow as a photographer is by having others look at your images and provide unbiased and constructive feedback. Friends and family can be great sources for feedback, but there is no substitute for professional feedback that encourages you to go farther, to reshoot, to think about a scene or subject in different ways. That type of feedback is what I provide if you sign up for photo critiques.

Each photo critique is assesses the technical aspects of exposure, lighting, color, content, composition, and creative approach.

To request a photo critique, e-mail me at charlotte@wordsandphotos.org. We'll arrange to have your image sent to me, and I'll provide the critique as a attachment in an e-mail message. Depending on the image, critique length ranges from 1/2 page to one or more pages. And a follow-on exchange/discussion to answer question is included in the price.

Each image critique is $35.

Payments accepted via PayPal or check.

I hope these services will be of interest to you. I think that either the instruction or the critique service can help aspiring and student photographers to grow their skills and expertise.
